Language Directors are part of a community that creates an intensive four-week immersion program for middle and high school students each summer. Located on two college campuses, The academy offers students the opportunity to study Arabic, Mandarin Chinese, French or Spanish with skilled language educators. Language Directors are senior administrators that work in close consultation with the Academic Director to implement and appropriately adapt the academy curriculum, guidelines, and policies. They lead a team of experienced educators and Residential Advisors to create a unique immersion academic program.


The academy follows the traditions and success of the College immersion programs and the Institute of International Studies curriculum development expertise. All staff and students adopt the college Language Pledge©, modified as needed for the student age group and language level, so that a full-immersion environment is created. Before the summer begins, Language Directors participate in a mid-winter training session and on-going conference calls to take part in the planning for the summer. They also work with the Academic Director to hire all language faculty and residential advisors.


Language Directors are charged to create a positive learning environment that is diverse in activities and experiences. They are in charge of all programmatic events that occur in their academies. They are enthusiastic and supportive individuals who can appropriately task their teams to plan and implement academic and non-academic daily activities for students. They are proactive individuals that can troubleshoot and work well with others to solve problems, always with goal to maintain a high quality language summer program. They ensure that their language teams are following the academy curriculum, policies and guidelines. The Language Director leads pre-camp training for all academic matters within their language.


Assistant Language Directors support the Language Director with all of the aforementioned responsibilities and also have teaching obligations.


We seek: Assistant Language Directors should command a high degree of spoken and written proficiency in Mandarin Chinese; they should have extensive experienced working with middle or high school students; and should have leadership experience. This is a residential position. All employees will be provided room and board and will have scheduled time off each day and week. All employees pay for their travel to and from program locations. Housing is not provided for family members of faculty.

The School of Languages, Cultures and World Affairs (LCWA) at one College in Charleston invites applications for a full-time tenure-track Assistant Professor position in Chinese language and China Studies to begin Fall 2009.

The successful candidate will have primary teaching responsibilities in Chinese language at all levels, with a 3/3 teaching load. Candidates should have native or near native fluency in Chinese; a Ph.D. by August 2009 is required, preferably in Chinese or Asian/ East Asian Studies or a related disciplinary field. To meet the rising demand for Chinese language teachers and expand the global dimension of its internationally recognized teacher education program, the College of Education at The University is seeking scholars with a demonstrated interest in second language education and teacher education. The College of Education faculty has a long history of scholarly activities in China and with Chinese educators. The Department of Teacher Education, a national leader in teacher preparation and research on teaching, teacher learning, curriculum, policy, and international education, is thus seeking one or more assistant professors in the Teaching of Chinese as a Second Language. While the positions will be located in the Department of Teacher Education, candidates can seek affiliation with other academic units within the College and will be encouraged to participate in activities at the Confucius Institute and the US-China Center for Research on Educational Excellence. These are academic year positions with a negotiable starting date of Fall 2009.

Major responsibilities. Successful candidates are expected to conduct research, teaching, and outreach in second language/foreign language education with an emphasis on Chinese language. They are also expected to seek external funding from a variety of sources to support research activities, and to contribute to on-going activities and initiatives in the Department, College, and University.

Qualifications. Applicants should have an earned doctoral degree in relevant field; a record of scholarly activities in second language education, child language development, cross-cultural communication, bilingual education, or teacher education; and fluency in Chinese and English. The successful candidate will teach simultaneous interpreting and will also strengthen the department's offerings in literary and cultural studies. Course assignments will include a two-semester interpreter training sequence in a language-neutral environment, plus a combination of undergraduate and graduate courses in Comparative Literature/ Translation Studies, taught in English.
